Benthall Grange – former Ironbridge Power Station

Project Overview

Benthall Grange is a large-scale regeneration project transforming the former Ironbridge Power Station site into a vibrant mixed-use community. Situated on a 350-acre site adjacent to the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, the development will create new residential, employment, educational, and retail opportunities while revitalizing a significant brownfield location.

The Chellenge

Following the closure of the Ironbridge Power Station in 2015, the site presented a unique opportunity for regeneration. The challenge was to redevelop this historic industrial location while addressing transport requirements, environmental considerations, flood risk constraints, and infrastructure demands.

Our Role

Working alongside Harworth Group, we provided specialist transport and infrastructure consultancy services from the early acquisition stage through planning and ongoing delivery phases.

Our responsibilities included:

  • Transport due diligence
  • Transport Assessment preparation
  • Travel Plan development
  • Infrastructure planning and design
  • Highway mitigation design
  • Drainage and flood risk support
  • Planning and condition discharge assistance

Infrastructure Solutions

Our work focused on creating a sustainable infrastructure framework to support the site’s transformation, including:

  • Transport impact assessments
  • Sustainable travel strategies
  • Primary highway infrastructure design
  • Off-site mitigation works
  • Drainage infrastructure planning
  • Flood risk management support
  • Serviced plot infrastructure delivery

Project Outcome

The project successfully progressed through consultation and planning stages, receiving recommendations for approval from both Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council. Infrastructure design and delivery activities continue to support the phased transformation of the former power station into a thriving mixed-use destination.
