East Midlands Gateway Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI)

Project Overview

East Midlands Gateway is a nationally significant logistics and freight infrastructure development located adjacent to Castle Donington. The project comprises approximately 6 million square feet of rail-served warehouse space and a state-of-the-art intermodal freight terminal capable of accommodating up to 16 trains per day, creating one of the UK’s most important strategic freight hubs.

The Chellenge

As a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), the development required extensive collaboration between multiple highway authorities, transport stakeholders, and government agencies. The challenge was to create a highly accessible logistics hub while minimizing impacts on the surrounding transport network and promoting sustainable travel options.

Our responsibilities included:

  • Strategic transport planning
  • Highway infrastructure design
  • Stakeholder coordination
  • Sustainable transport planning
  • Traffic impact assessment support
  • Detailed highway design development
  • Infrastructure mitigation planning

Infrastructure Solutions

The project included a comprehensive package of transport and highway improvements, including:

  • M1 Junction 24 improvements
